Bed & Breakfast Ispica
The church of S. Maria Maggiore was built right after the terrible earthquake of 1693, which shook eastern Sicily; it was necessary to find a place to host the statue of the Blessed Christ at the Column, miraculously saved from the destruction of this old church in Cava Ispica.
In 1749, the architect Vincenzo Sinatra completed the Loggia, semi-elliptical, on the model of the Bernini colonnade in St. Peter’s.
The Open Gallery presents 23 openings, interspersed with Iesene, which form a barrier between the prospect and the horizon. From rococò style, the Loggia provides a valuable record compared to similar structures which were often made of wood, for the fairs during religious festivals.
It’s possible to see Il Loggiato in the episode “The Paper Moon” of the series “Il Commissario Montalbano”.
